How much structure can eight local cases generate?

A one-dimensional cellular automaton applies the same eight-case local rule everywhere. Persistent domains, collisions, and moving structures emerge without adding a higher-level controller.
Everyday analogy. Each driver can follow the same simple rule—react only to the car immediately ahead—yet stop-and-go waves, gaps, and moving patterns can appear across the whole highway without a traffic conductor.
